 14 Weekend Lake Trout
« Thread Started on Apr 27, 2009, 7:55am »

We did a couple charters over the weekend and found tough conditions with a hard south wind on Saturday and another north wind on Sunday. We fished the first few hours of Saturday with Fran Hallie and his parents at Sandbar hoping for a salmon or two, but didn't even get a swat. Headed back to the main lake to find some protected laker fishing just north of Gravelly Point. Put four nice lakers in the boat and called it a day. Sunday we hosted Giovanni Natale and his lady Caroline. In spite of brisk north winds we landed 10 lake trout in 6 hours including two doubles. One double turned up a pair of ten-pound fish. 145 lakers so far this year and counting. Two more charters this week and two again next weekend.

Nice laker!!! Do you find that they have been getting bigger in size the past few years? How big was the one in your picture?

Thanks Salmoneye!

Hey Frenchy,

That laker was just over 10 pounds. Yes, the lakers are getting bigger over the past few years. I think it's the alewives. Of the 145 fish we've caught so far, three were cleaned and taken north over the border. The three all had full bellies. There was a mixture of large and small smelt and small and medium sized alewives in their guts.

Hi Jim,

I find the fishing to be quite a bit better than last year. Certainly I'm doing more business than last year. Catch rates are up too, but I'm using a few new tricks this year and they seem to be paying off. Your tape is one advantage. I'm using strips on my lake trolls. Also, you may recall my asking you about ways to tweek the rigger weights to make better contact with bottom on slopes and lessen the chances for snags. I've accomplished this secondly, and have improved my catch rate as a result. I'm going to keep this one to myself for a while. Obviously my clients are privleged to seeing the method in action but they are paying for the info in a round-about way. I'll be glad to give you the tip when we speak again by phone. Thanks for all you do, here, for the team and in the tackle business!
