July 10 to 15, fished with some Retired Fishing Partners (RFP) from the Winni board, 9 guys in two shifts (split week) and 2 boats. It was the first time for most of the guys fishing Champlain; they enjoyed the trip, fishing, camaraderie and the lake scenery
Fished Sunday PM at Whallon Bay, in 120 FOW, down 40 to 47 on riggers. Used, Pearl V/H and Blue & Silver V/H blades on the riggers. Fished Whallon Bay several evenings, very productive using Green Hex (1), Split Rock (2) and Fire Tiger lures.
Set out and fished all other trolling routes in the area from Barber Point to Spit Rock, the green can to Basin Harbor, the Thompson Hump, the Mansion and Garden to Cedar Beach. The most productive was Thompson Point to Split Rock and Whallon Bay.
For the first 2 days the wind was out of the south and then change to the north. The first few days were the most productive with the thermal cline setup near 45’ then the wind change to the north and the cline went deeper and the bite was off. Caught more yellow and white perch, white fish, than Salmon and Lakers with the north wind.
Talked to Supper Cab, Reel Deal, Raz and gave Ben at Dockside a jingle on the cell asking about the conditions up north. We were thinking of change locations due to the north wind shaking up the fishery. He said it was no better up there and gave us some tips on lure colors and depths.
The some of the lures that caught fish in the order of importance are:
1. Top getter, Green Hex
2. Split Rock
3. Fire Tiger
4. 2 Slice TG
5. 2 Slice DB
6. Grave Digger
7. Black/Purple
8. Rainbow FK
9. Water Melon
10. Secret Weapon
11. Blue/White no name
Nice steelhead, 20” ,3.6 lb
