Fished today with Drew (a well known Plattsburgh restaurant owner), Jim, Shawn and CJ. We worked hard for the five lakers and two browns we managed to land, but two quality fish made it a memorable outing. We lost at least one other laker and one nice brown that didn't quite make the boat.
After starting with the lakers and finding it slow, with only two modest fish, we moved off to Malletts Bay and trolled for salmon and browns. As soon as we got set up a nice brown pealed off a copper and red Honey Bee slider down 15' over 70'. That fish was digging like mad on Drew and it came off just a few feet from the net. About five minutes later another bigger male brown hit a copper Needlefish down 40' over 80'. It was Drew's son Shawn's turn and he fought it like a champ. Here's that beautiful chunky kyped brown...

We landed one other small brown and struck out on the salmon so we headed back out on the main lake for more lake trout action. We boated two more medium sized fish near Valcour Island and were just about to call it a done deal when we moved off a 60' reef into about 85' of water. The trolls weren't touching bottom this time, as they were down with about 65' of cable out. The rod bounced once real hard and the drag was grinding. It happened to be Shawn's turn again at the plate and this time he was tangling with an old hog laker. After a few minutes the fish was brought to the net and quickly weighed, photographed and released. It had obviously been hammered by lamprey over its lifetime and had one fresh wound. Here's the 12 pound lake trout that survived yet another battle and ended our day on a positive note...

Nice to see browns like that, makes one think of what could be with a brown fishery here in Champlain as well as salmon and lakers.

Thanks Guys,
I forgot to mention that three out of seven fish brought in had smallish lamprey stuck to the side of them, including that brown. Most of the time I try to take pictures of the best side of a fish. Not very good odds if you ask me. Not sure how fisheries managers come up with their numbers, but we need to keep a full court press on them regarding lamprey control.

Capt. Mick, Beautiful Fish! That brown's a whopper!!! Regarding the charting of lamprey, I keep track of the hits in the New York fishery journal as well as the lampery's I kill. I think a few other guys are doing the same. The more data we get the biologists, the better. I think we all agree the program is definately providing positive results, but everyone needs to keep at it. If you're not involved in the journal program and you want to sign up, there's a link at the top of the forum page. 'just my thoughts. Tim

BTW... The diary program is the second string under Capt. Tony's "important stickies" thread. Thanks.
