So.... I hit the water today, hoping to get in some fishing before the afternoon thunder storms hit, hoping to catch a few browns and some salmon.
I start out just outside of St Albans Bay at 8:40ish and hung there for a couple hours without much luck. Got one small freshly stocked sub-legal salmon and a little white perch.
hmmmm..... swapping lures, changing speeds, messing with depths, can't hardly buy a fish.
No other boats around......but I love it.
Can't stay here, I think I'll look for some fish.
So I move down south to Eagle Mountain area. I pass between one other boat and Capt Tony. I want to go past my normal set up area, turn around to the north and set up while going with the southerly wind. I'm alone, going solo today and my boat don't do well against the wind with no body at the helm.
I set up....downrigger at 36 with a cheater 5' above...move to the other side of the boat....
Rig up a lead set up with a new DB Smelt I'd never fished with. I changed out the stock hook and put out 5 colors (that's all the reel will hold w/backing), then a 2 ounce snap weight.
Made a phone call to the nervous first mate...(she doesn't like it when I'm alone) and told her where I moved to....
[glow=red,2,300]BANG[/glow]---lead core rod doubles over...fish on I say and hang up.
Before I can grab the rod I notice the fish is gone...hmmm
[glow=red,2,300]BANG[/glow]...there it goes again, and again the rod relaxes...hmmmm.
Reel it all in and check the terminal end...all is well......
Put all that line back out, snap the weight back on...more line out, and sit down.
Tony goes by, I try to wave but he appears to be busy with clients...Bye Tony!
2 minutes later.....
[glow=red,2,300]SMASH[/glow]-----the rod doubles over and hangs on to the fish this time.
I mean doubles over!!!!! 5 colors of lead out plus two ounces of snap weight.
I found it hard to "feel" my drag with all that weight out there but finally managed to get the fish near the boat. Once the lead was out of the water and just mono showing, the fish made a nice run. Patience.....let it go....hang on....
Finally I got it back and got a look at it....
cool I think, a nice eye.
Then I start shaking, visibly, physically shaking. Crap I've never put a fish like this in this boat I start thinking.....
Shaking like a queer at a weenie roast......
Grab the net, no prob.....fish in the boat.....
Cool.
Went to Bayside in St Albans, weighed it in, entered it into the All-Season....
Miller time....

Excited, that ended the day. The weather radio went into screaming alert mode, storm on the way.
