I remember doing a search not long ago and found a couple of charts that had the depths where the colors faded, hopefully I or someone else can find them.

Excellent thread!!
Always good to remember some past readings and specially when they are put together.
Something not to forget is the: vibrations, something that is difficult to explain. Why one particular spoon works better then the other with same color.
Thanks

Paul
Great thread and thanks for putting it together in one place, of all the things we fret about color seems to be the hot subject, "What color are they hitting ?" is the question that is ask all the time. I know I for one still has a lot to learn about how colors appear in the water but thanks to Jim and Salmoneye we have all had our eyes opened up to it and more to learn.

Thank you for posting that Voyager. That color chart is very interesting. I have copied it. That will surely help me in my trout and salmon pursuit.

Guys - glad you like the post. If you are truly interested in this topic I recommend that you read the book I included the link to. The author is mostly interested in west coast steel-heading but the observations about how colors change underwater is universal. The book has unbelievable photos of various lures under water. It would be interesting if we could get someone to photograph some of our favorite lures at different depths in Lake Champlain. Anybody know a diver with a camera?
A final thought on the color subject. Contrast is important on the lure itself as well as the lure against the background as the fish see it. Fish are usually looking up (against the surface/sky background) or across (water background).
Looking forward to the workshop creations. Happy Taping!

Fish are usually looking up (against the surface/sky background) or across (water background). Paul This is one Great Tip for all the new guys who are starting to tape up their own spoons now. The contrast on the lure itself that Paul mentions can be very subtle or very bold but it can really make the other colors pop out and be the difference between a lure that catches fish or one that doesn't. Hey Paul easy on the books, there is only so much room in my little pea size brain, , another very interesting book, looks like I'll have to add it to my reading list, one thing for sure I'll have enough reading material to keep me busy if I have back surgery. LOL Pat

wow that is some great information, lots of stuff that i had no idea about! How did they get the fish to tell them what colors they can see and at what dept they stop seeing certain colors. LOL. The grey/brown water at the Crown point Bridge can be very tricky to figure out, This informaton has some great point to take into concideration. TOdd
