Hunter,
I looked for the good law you suggested but wonder which one was good. I hope I am not getting to cynical in my old age but I see a list of legislation that is punitive and heavily influence by the Chair of House Committee of Fish, Wildlife and Water Resources, David Deen-Westminster. Rather than fish and game experts introducing laws, this biased politician has over and over again introduced legislation to punish the sportsman including removing guns and hunting rights for life of a hunter if caught drunk? No one should hunt drunk but a life sentence is outrageous. Don't forget the felt boots law he got passed to enhance his business , a fly fishing outfitter.
Matt Crawford should have listed the House Bill Reference for these bills so the reader could look the up to see what is what and who sponsored it.
1. Reciprocity with other states for wildlife violations-is punitive . Increases Vermont's punishment for violators that violated a different states laws. H.53 2. Public Trust Doctrine....excess control....Pete should live 3. Saw Log forest operators allowed to kill 10 deer? Its a license to slaughter. Deen Introduced. H.13 4. Prohibit Bear Hunting with dogs. Further limits hunters liberties. H.89 5. Inspect Outdoor ranges. More unnecessary bureaucracy. Deen Introduced. H.10 6. Mandate Gun Storage and set up 3 year prison term for violation. Outrageous. Deen Introduced. H.83 7. Doubles Cash Penalties for Big game Violations from 1,000 to $2,000. Punitive. H. 66
So Deen himself is grinding away, making a long term , consistent effort to reduce the rights and privileges on hunters and treat him or her with severe unusual punishment. In addition to that he intends to make laws that favor a select few like the tree planters over all others who engage in farming.

Personally I'm not seeing alot to object to in 1, 2 or 7.
1. If you lose your hunting/fishing license in another state for violations.....don't come to VT looking for one. I have no issues with this. 2. My issue with this isn't with Pete the Moose; it's with the underhanded way in which it was passed; the power it gives to the owner of the elk preserve in Irasburg; and the precident it sets based upon public opinion regarding one animals life regardless of the impact on wildlife as a whole. 7. I've got no problem with large fines for people who take game out of season. There are areas of this state where deer jacking continues to be a problem. I view it as a form of theft and have no problems with a little extra funding for the F&W dept. coming across the backs of lawbreakers.
Those are my opinions.....

Good points hunter.
1. I was thinking of things like baited deer which is legal in a lot states but not in ours. It would be hard for me to think a Vermont hunter could not hunt in a bait state if his violation in Vermont was that. States have so many different rules that violations in one are not necessarily a violation in another. To me it seems like a can of worms. What the heck , there is no reciprocity for gun use in the states, you can get a year in jail exercising your Vermont rights in NY city . so why do the opposite for the sake of unclear enforcement?
2. Not sure if game farms are allowed in our state, is this one in Irasburg the exception? I was thinking if there is no proof about disease getting spread to the wild animals , then property rights should trump. But on the other hand I have wondered why in heck anyone would hunt on a game farm in the first place? And I agree that the legislature should not be heavily involved with fish and game rules as they may do things like Deen and things like the Pete episode.
7. I don't see any poaching up in Plainfield but I am sure you are right about poaching being a problem. I don't see a doubling of the fine though as a deterrent. Just another large burden for the family of the poacher who probably cant afford the bullets in the first place. If the average poacher is looking for family food, then a $1,000 dollars is a high price and thats before all the other fines and loss of truck and gun and on and on. Its a massive deterrent already. If the poacher is an organized ring selling the meat then they have conspiracy laws for that to throw the book at them. I just don't like to see average people beat on by the system.
Just my two cents.

Boots,
The bill (felt boots) h.488 was presented by David Deen a state legislator. He is chair of the Fish Wildlife&Water Resources committee. Deen is also operator of strictly trout, a fly fishing guide service he has operated for 22 years. He was a senator 1987-88 and has been a Representative since 1991. God knows why the people in Westminster re-elect him. they must not know what his agenda is.
Rock snot law he introduced benefits him because he is a fly fishing guide. He would not want his favorite spots ruined by some guy and his kid trying to catch a fish with felt boots? Apparently Fish and Game did no support this law but I don't know that for certain from a source in Fish and game.
David deen is no stranger to what most of would consider extremism. He earned (or was given) a MS in Environmental Science from Antioch University. The College (diploma mill)a few years ago, before it folded, for example, invited a Transgender Rights Advocate , Leslie Feinberg to give the commencement speech. I mean there is a time and place for everthing...but this? Antioch did not give out grades...so this activist like behavior he exhibits in making laws that undermine Vermont Traditions, for no good purpose, was part of his training. Fortunately most of his bills die so his peers don't buy all his questionable thinking. But yet Shap Smith puts him in as chair...?
Since he has not been able to use his degree for gainful employment , he uses it to bully Vermont sportsman. (my guess and belief).
I hope the Republican party or moderate democrats run someone against him.

I'm not a fan of Deen but the felt sole ban is a good thing. Rock snot, or Didymo, is a serious problem and easily spread by felt soles going from waterway to waterway. It can have a big impact on the fishery of the rivers it is present in. If banning felts soles can help slow the spread of it, that's a good thing. I own 3 pairs of wading shoes with felt soles, 2 of them pretty new in great condition, so I have to get in gear to replace them with some of the new technologies available.

Simba, what replaces felt soles?
The felt ban won't do us much good if we break our leg or get washed down stream.
