A summary of my rifle and muzzleboomer season..... saw 22 deer in the woods,6 of which were spike horns.Almost hit a nice 8-pointer with the truck going in to hunt in the dark the last week end, my buddy saw a monster buck with 8 does in an open feild the last Sat. of muzzleloader season but he had his crossbow and the big one was too far to shoot. All in all a lot of fun,but no venison this year.

My season ended a little better, but saw few deer. Only saw a couple of does during bow season, two fawns and a doe rifle season and the first deer that I saw during muzzleloader season was a nice three pointer (one antler had been broken off). He was 138 lbs. and is in the freezer. I did see some other stuff that made the seasons a little more interesting: a moose, porcupine, mink, several squirrels and birds.

My season is not over yet. Opening day of rifle season I saw 7 deer in the morning one was a spike. In the afternoon I saw 9 deer and one was a spike. Then at 3pm a small 8pter came through. ( He is in the freezer.) I hunted the mountains a few times looking for a bear put no luck. Monday started muzzleloading season. I saw two does driving home from hunting. Today I spent the day in the woods and never saw a tail. The season has one more week to go. Wednesday afternoon found me in the woods watching a small clearing. One doe was it for today. Thursday found me stalking an 8pter I saw on the way home from work. The wind was right it was quiet but he eluded me. Back in the woods friday afternoon. Finally saw some deer 13 in total all does. I will spend the weekend in the mountain at a friends camp. Report when I get back. Got back from the mountains, saw 3 doe Saturday and two doe Sunday. One of the guys saw a fresh bear track, no such luck for me. Two days left. I ended up having to work the last two days. So my season is now over.

VT season was tough this year. I saw very few deer and hunted all days but a weeks worth of the VT season. Shot one fat doe with my bow back in Oct and saw a HUGE buck 2nd day of rifle that made a brief appearance and caught me unprepared VT deer herd in in trouble. IMO. I dont think this can be blamed all on the poor weather this season. I spent 3 days hunting in NY and got these 2 within a minute of each other with my bow opening day archery back in Oct and on second day of rifle season in Nov this 174lb half racked shoulda been a 8 buck... I spent many years letting tons of stuff pass by being too selective. I told myself this year I wasnt going to do that anymore. ;D

Looks like the wildfisherwoman could use "wildhunterwoman" for her handle. Makes me want ot start hunting in N.Y. again! I agree that, if you like venison, you'd better not pass on too many in Vt.! Good going wildfisherwoman.

Over the 3 Vt seasons I would say I saw about 15-18 doe and 2 nice buck. This is only counting deer seen while out hunting not from the road. I hunted many days/hours. most days I saw nothing. Both bucks were harvested.

I haven't seen much of a change in numbers in central Vermont. I've also been hunting a lot harder and spending more time scouting, I think the deer are there but they are adapting to so much hunting pressure and becoming more nocturnal. Shot the biggest buck of my life this year and it was a giant for where I hunt, and also there has been one spotted that trumps mine. Something is working and everything will get worse before it gets better The quality of bucks being shot is a lot better. I remember growing up and 75% of the deer checked in were spikes, and if someone shot a 6 point then they were a legend. things are changing be patient, ignorance is bliss.

To see deer, you just need to cross VT's western boarder. Seasons started in late Sept and ended yesterday. If you want to see lots of deer, the southern zone is the place, (you only need to be 100 yards over the boarder and you will see deer---I think the deer have some sort marker that tells them to stay west of the boarder???). If you want to hunt the big woods, hunt the Northern Zone--some of the prettiest land in the country.
