Does anyone konw the rules for the launch at Harriman Reservoir in southern VT? I found a kayaking website which said the launch is owned by the power company and opened daily. I am trying to find how to get the hours it is open.
Also does anyone have experience fishing this lake?
thanks
Dwayne

I have fished it for 20 years, the gates are all shut until mid may but you can launch in several ungated areas with a small boat. The lake is still mostly froze and will be that way for a week or two depending on the weather. The wilmington end will be the most open as that is where the two main branches of the deerfield come in. Fish the mouths of the brooks this time of the year where the warm water is coming in. worms and shinners seem to be the best ticket. but dont forget the thomas boyants and spinners. rainbows in the morning and evening with and acasional brown or brookie. nothing huge but I did see a 30 inch laker caught this winter by a friend. Good healthy 9 lbs. Good luck, any questions let me know. buckshot

Thanks for the info buckshot. My Lund is 16' so I am not sure if I categorize as a small boat or not? I guess I should just take a ride up sometime soon and look at a couple of the launches and see how they look.

!6 ft is doable, the ungated launches are kinda ruff, but there is a new on on rt 100 headed for bennington. Right next to high country. All tar but very steep. Also the launch at castle hill not to bad but usually full of debree from the high water. some times just a par of waders and you can push the crap out of the way. I will get a report on how the ice is melting and let you know. Where r u coming from?

TransCanada owns Harriman Reservoir and provides public access to it. Some areas are gated in the off season (Mt. Mills, Wards Cove). Some are not, including the newly constructed ramp on Rt 9 a few miles west of the village of Wilmington. The ramp is steep but not bad, concrete bars provide traction and there is parking for about 8 rigs.
I fish there for SM bass in spring, bass and trout in fall, perch in winter. It can be a challenging place to fish, but very scenic and undeveloped. I use both the RT 9 ramp and the rustic access off Castle Hill Rd.

Thanks everyone for the answers. Buckshot...I am coming from Schaghticoke NY. it is about a 50 minute ride for me to the lake. I am surprised to hear there is still ice on it, especially since we have had unseasonably warm weather the past couple of weeks or so.
I may take a ride out this coming weekend to do some stream brook trout fishing. While I am doing that I might check out the launches on Harriman and see how they are.
thanks,
Dwayne

I also have a 16ft boat & do most of my launching @ Sawyer's Power House Ramp on the southern end. It is off rt 9 just below the town of Jacksonville. The launch is ok & is always open. The problem is parking is tight when the water is high. There is a pull out on Rt 9 a few hundred ft South of the ramp that is a good place to park after the boat is launched. I do most of my fishing on Harriman since it is close to home. Fishing can often be tough there but it is a beautiful place to float & wash lures. To be honest I did pretty good there last year & did not get skunked once just nothing big. I fish during the week & have no problem parking. I do not fish there on Sundays when the boat traffic can be high & fast. Like Buckshot & Brian I will be glad to answer any questions you have if I can. One of the most consistent lures I use for trout & salmon is the Tazmanian Devil Predator. Blue, green & purple along with silver seems to be my favorite colors ther. Good luck. Jerry

dylans boat what is a tazmanian devil predator? Never heard of it, is it a color or a kind of lure? Still ice on the south end but it should be broken up in a week or so or warm windy weather. Looks pretty thin. Fishinmachine those are comercail wind turbines. there gonna put up another dozen or so on the adjacent mountains. Not sure why they want to clutter up our beutiful mountains. let me answerer my own question, the federal green tax dollars$$$$. They don't have to make power just look like the do. lol should be on the big pond(champlain) this weekend if the weather holds out.

Thanks Dylans boat. I am going to check out the launches this coming weekend. Appreciate the info. I am a bit confused though. Rt 9 runs up along the north end of the lake and it seems rt 100 runs along the east side, through Jacksonville and then tucking close on the south end? Did you mean to say off of 100?
I'll probably wait until the end of April before I fish it. Let the water warm up a bit.

Bluelund you're correct. The southern end access ramp is off Rt. 100, just a few yards really. You can cut off some miles by taking the Wilmington Cross Rd. (a right hand turn when traveling southbound on Rt 100 before you get into Jacksonville village).
The northern portion of Harriman (Lake Whitingham we call it) is ice free, but I could see ice further south from RT 9 yesterday.

Sorry Bluelund, I did mean Rt 100. I took a ride on my motorcycle today & swung by the lower end of the reservoir along Rt 100. Like Brian & Ben said there is still ice on the southern end although there is plenty of open water along the edges of the ice. It won't be long now. Ben, the Tazmanian devil is a type of lure from Austrailia I believe. Predator is the color. It is blue with a black ladder back & silver belly. This lure can be bent to create more action. It has also worked well on salmon on Champlain. Cabelas has these lures although they do not always carry the predator. Good luck all. Jerry

Hello all, I too am looking to fish Harriman/Whitingham this weekend. I have a 16' bowrider. Any thoughts on what might be the best place to drop in. The launch off of Rte 9 looks awfully steep. (Don't want to get stuck) I plan on getting there around 8:30 to 9:00 in the AM. Does anyone have an idea on how busy it might be or should I try the launch at the southern end? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. I am coming from Bennington. Thanks again for all the posts regarding this lake, this is the ONLY place I have been able to find info about Harriman. Thanks again EdM

I launched my 16' Crestliner at RT 9 Monday. The ramp looks steep but isn't bad. Pulled back up with Tacoma in 2 WD. The dock is currently using up a large portion of the parking area. You should have no problem finding some parking room though. The ski boaters aren't likely to be out yet. I was alone so I used a pair of boots to get into the boat. Had to back the trailer in pretty far to float off. It would be the same situation if you used the lesser improved access ( I wouldn't call it a "ramp") off Castle Hill Rd. You'd need boots if alone.
SM bass fishing was excellent, don't know if trout have been stocked yet. Water temp. 49 but may be headed down briefly.
