I'll add on, help out the new guy. Not being far removed from being that complete greenhorn I can tell you nobody wants to be that guy holding things up at the launch. I still offer folks to go ahead of me even if they get to the launch after me because I know I'm not quickest and launching and loading, but early on I twice had a hard time getting the boat back on the trailer in a strong crosswind. They were very different experiences. The first time a guy showed up while I was in the middle of struggling and decided to get out stare at me and tap his foot. I was already into the mess so there was no real option to get out of his way other than get the boat in, but the added stress of someone breathing down your neck just makes you mess up more. The second time a guy showed up in the middle of me struggling and jumped right out and offered to help. The boat got on the trailer much quicker, he was able to get fishing much quicker, and I learned some things so I'd be less of a problem case in the future. Loading a boat in the wind is like many other things in life...takes practice and repetition, for anyone to not offer to help and offer COSTRUCTIVE information is uncontionable. Want to know what I say to the guy tapping his foot watching??? Screw um...you learn by doing, his problem if he forgot about the time when he was learning to. Boat launches....don't get me started My favorite is when I had to unhitch my trailer and pull a car out that was halfway submerged with boat and trailer attached ;D So I back up and hook up two 5,000 pound cargo straps, and hand them to the guy. I am all for helping out, but this guy looks up at me like I am going to go diving to attach them to his vehicle Oh, and the time I was trolling by the launch and this guy is launching a 24' pontoon by himself. He backs her in, gives it a bump and away she went....rope and all;D I pulled lines in and gave the guy a lift

Back to Fishing Ethics! ...short verbal lesson about fishing ethics and courtesy. A little reaction and help would have been nice. Thorny You are too polite. But then again, don't change.

Excellent thread! I spend time fishing because I love it. I'm able to fish because most of my bills get paid by winter work. This reply merges my two worlds. A major snowboard company and NSAA(National Ski Area Association) came up with a promotional/educational system a few years ago to address just what this thread is about ...ethics. There were problems identified in terrain parks(areas on the mountain where big jumps, halfpipes, and other features are located) and other areas on the mountain that revolved around safety, ethics and courtesy. Most of this was due to a lack of education or innocent ignorance and not due to aggressive instigation. They developed the following simple system called SmartStyle. In reading this whole thread this morning I kept thinking about how related these two seemingly different situations are. Here is the nationally recognized SmartStyle system: EASY STYLE IT- start with the small jumps and work up. (this could apply to learning how to use planer boards with short lengths and/or fewer lines out first) LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP- scope out the jumps BEFORE you hit them. (boaters also need to be aware of their surroundings whether it's at the ramps, using boards, lead line etc.) HAVE A PLAN- get a lesson/coach (many folks would benefit from simple educational courses whether boaters safety, use of downriggers and lead line, planer boards etc. ...charter captains, I'm sure you all are more than willing to teach when folks are on your rigs) ...and my personal favorite: RESPECT GETS RESPECT- from the park to the liftline (this applies to us as "from put-in to take-out") In the snowboard and skateboard world, the tone at any park, pipe, ramp etc. is USUALLY set by the older more experienced guys/girls. Not the guys with the flashiest new gear. Many people on this forum seem to fall into that "experienced" category. No, I'm not calling anyone old. But we can, and should, set the tone on our beautiful lake. I know I'm preaching to the choir here on this forum but maybe, instead of passing more laws or having to step up costly law enforcement, or getting the old man to draw his shotgun, we could get the message out to more folks through education, as many of us already mentioned. Here's an idea that may or may not be popular/possible. What if we got some of the major players in this industry together at the local or national level to adopt a similar educational/informational system? I bet sponsorship monies could easily cover the costs of simple signs at State owned accesses. Maybe the tourney guys would help promote? VTFWD, NYFWD, B.A.S.S., Trout Unlimited, LCI, Plattsburgh Rotary, Berkely, Off-shore, Merc, Who knows? We could start a trend, save some hassles, make life on the water more enjoyable and safer. I know signs dont fix all but perhaps they're a start. ...I'm just saying. For anyone still reading, here is a link to a short video about SmartStyle: www.freestyleterrain.org/watchmovie.asp?show=section_2The video introduces the SmartStyle concept and also shows examples of signage. A fourth component, "Make a Plan" was added since the making of this video.

I remember last year or maybe the prior, trolling core with weight south toward Thompson's, meet up up with three sails probably under motor power going north/ north west. I pull a Crazy Ivan, sure 'nuff core fires, salmon 20"+ on a # 3 honeybee..made my day for sure.
I'm always mindful of my fellow trollers...but may cut it close if I don't know the terrain.

It is not ROCKET SCIENCE folks. When you are at the launch particularly Apple Island. Don't park right in front of the ramp and proceed to rig and un rig your boats. Weather or not there are others waiting or not. You know dam well there is plenty of space where you will ultimately park in the field. I really don't understand how you people up there think this is OK. Not trying to be biased. Butt there were 3 Canadians plates doing this today while two others One which was myself were waiting. They sat right there even when they were approached and asked to kindly move. I don't care where your are from. Just have some respect for your fellow fisherman and some common sense. What is wrong with people? ?? Capt. Tony www.anbradoncharters.com

Totally agree with you Cpt Tony! Been going north of the border to other lakes for years and have been amazed that the "friendliest" nation on earth seems to let it all out on the water!

Totally agree with you Cpt Tony! Been going north of the border to other lakes for years and have been amazed that the "friendliest" nation on earth seems to let it all out on the water! I totally agree with the launch thing. I live in the "north" if that is where canada is referred to and I agree that there are a lot of people that have no clue about the launching ethics but lets not generalize. Not being from quebec but living here now, I realized that a lot of french speaking only people dont have all the luxuries that bilingual people have. We (french) only have some forums to read and learn about things such as fishing, ethics on the lake etc.. It drives me nuts too when people have no clue or don't care that they are holding up people. I politely ask them to move or let the others ahead of them. Some have the mentality of me myself and I and this is a political thing that has been going on for a while here. I really like this thread and don't want to start anything but I would hate to see the canadians looked badly upon in general because of a few dumbA$%'s. This board is great and there is a lot of great people here (even though I have met very few). You guys are always willing to help out. ENJOY the fishing Sturgeon

With the growing popularity of this forum and the great info on here. It has become to cause many problems with the heavy congestion a post with locations can cause. Posting a location is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot as well as all the other fisherman in that area. Please post away just leave out the locations, lake Champlain is not that huge and having 50 boats in one bay is just asking for many problems from launching problems to on the water issues.

Also where you launched out of is not necessary info. Love to read the detailed stuff about your set ups and all the tid bits of info. Just please no locations. Learning a body of water is part of fishing. Posting of locations will be the death of this site!

You know, that is what I LOVE about the Admiral, Jud Swenor's Fishing Hot Line is you can Call him at 802-425-2020 and he will give anyone the lowdown on what, where, when. The number of "New Fishermen" he has encouraged shown how to fish despite that he may be "sharing His" private fish is a true measure of a Great Fisherman and Person.
This site is great because of the sharing and encouragement that is here. Read any of the past posts of new YOUNG people signing on. Getting more people to fish should make us a better fishery and recipients of funding for such. Many of us have fished more days than are now left to us. These young new people are the future of our sport and not some closed society. Keeping secrets won't make you a better fisherman, just makes you think you are.....sorry if I disagree with any of the above views. Fish On ! Randy

Keeping secrets don't make you a better fisherman, just makes you think you are..... Could not agree more... I'm happy to tell you what, where, and when... If it helps you, more power to you... Nine times out of ten it may get you started, but it will not guarantee you can do what I did today, yesterday, or ten minutes ago... Some of my most productive days have been when I get tired of the combat fishing, and head off solo on a hunch... The only things I will not share, are those tidbits passed on to me with the caveat that I not 'tell anyone'...Other than those few exceptions, I am glad to help if I can...

Randy,
I could not agree with you more. I've been fishing the converse area since about 1992 and one of the first people I met was you and you gave me a salmon fly you made I still have. those kind of interactions are memorable and add to the fishing experience. Up until about three years ago the one and only Admiral, the great Instigator, the indefatigable Salmon Eye, yourself, Reggie Hawthorne, and a few others had converse to ourselves. them some of us, including myself started to tell other fishermen about the great population and catch rate in that area. I spent many days and weekends with a couple of other boats...for years. Now many boats are around and all the guys that go there only ad to the fun and fishing experience, including our friends from Quebec.
In my mind, all these years the salmon died from the lake environment...almost to the man. Otherwise there would be twenty pound and greater salmon caught now. Unfortunately its a stocking program that keeps the fish around. Nothing else. Fishermen do not make a dent in the stocked schools and pods of salmon ....when you catch ten, I bet there are a thousand more to catch that never hit on that day. since they cannot spawn successfully in the blocked rivers, and something in the lake environment successfully eliminates a longer life for them, to say not to let fishermen know the hot spots is a waste of resource, for if they are not caught, they are wasted to nature.
What is it about the lake that in the 19th century twenty pound salmon where common and now its three pounders. If you knew the answer, that is the issue to solve, not keeping secrets as to where the good bite is.
