Ethics, it all depends, on what they see on TV, or hear now a day. Its just like your local roads in Vermont. I walk my beagle, each morning and night, near my home. Sorryful, but there are individuals, who throw, just about anything out there vehicles. Trash. Tires, etc. Do you think, these individuals, are your individuals, who own boats, etc? Well maybe some, or someone who does own a boat. All, we outdoor individuals can do is, when you see this individual do it. Pickup up there trash, and if they are still there, ask them, why they threw in out. Then move on. I pickup up trash, near my home everyday. Sorryful. I tell my family members, to pickup, after them selves. I hate to see any trash, on the sides of my area roads. These individuals, who throw out trash, from there vehicles, do not have any respect, for the environment, and must of gotten this habit, from other family members. They have no respect, for mother nature. They grew up in a city, or a hog pen, or worse. They just learn it from there family, or friends. Come to rural States, and think nothing of it. Sorryful.

Where ever I go, to Hunt, Fish or Camp, I see something, that is not surpose to be there, then i pick it up. Sorryful, that now adays, you still have the same problems, of illegal dumping, etc. I don't want to hear the same ole story, that we can't afford to pay, to have it taken care of, by the trash individual. Its Mothers Day. Those that throw things on the side of the roads, you should tell your mom, because if you don't. It will catch up with you.

I am a local and am of native population here in chittenden county. It's heartbreaking to see so many selfish, arrogant ignoramis's flying around this beautiful lake with no regard for anyone else's right to enjoy it themselves. Gone are the days when you could pull up anywhere on shore and catch fish in relative peace. Also gone are the days when common sense is rampant amongst folks with a love for outdoors sports. As for the potato gun......Back in the day people disapeered all the time when they disrespected the wrong people if i remember right! Have fun!

If I've got it right, a fisherman with planer boards out technically has right of way over a sailboat. I was nearly run over by a sailboat two years ago. I think he thought that I could turn ouit of HIS way, first. If I had to turn drastically to avoid an accident, I would have had my hands full getting untangled. He did manage to avoid me, but it was at the last second. I had another close call with one again this year, but it wasn't as bad.

Planer boards has nothing to do with the USCG Rules of the Road. A sailboat ,under sail power only, ALWAYS has the right of way over a power vessel. Avoid a confrontation, know the rules, and take collision avoidance measures early.

If that's what the USCG says, that's good enough for me. Who am I to argue? However, I did read something (I wish I could remember where) that said the opposite.

I have been trolling on the lake and have been circled by jetskis. the lake is big, give us some room to fish. also when you are trolling i seem to be a magnet for sailboats.Im going 2mph and they are flying at you, hwho has to move, its hard to get the riggers in and hit the gas

a sailboat does not have the right of way if her course will cause a collision

i also fish mostly anchored for catfish and bullhead and the same happens to me. bass boats come right in on you sometimes very fast in 3 ft of water and start casting all around my boat. some even have hooked my cat lines and some even have cut my lines when i have had cats on. i share the lake and do not fish near anyone either and was even almost swamped by a bass boat last year with my wife in the boat. its a 12 ft jon boat and i dont even have a motor on it and the guy comes in full throttle and quickly shuts his 250 hp down and guess what it made one huge wake. he wasnt more than 10 ft from us and then proceeded to cast right over are cat lines. he certainly wasnt a pro and im thinking it was his ist time with his new toy. when these boats run these big boats in this shallow water the fish just dissapear around us. this is a constant problem most of the summer for me.

Rule 18 - Responsibilities Between Vessels Return to the top of the page
(b) A sailing vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:
(i) a vessel not under command; (ii) a vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver; (iii) a vessel engaged in fishing.
This is taken from the USCG Navigational rules.

Love to bring this post back to life. It is something we all could probably do better at. #1 in my book is to be helpful. I give lures to kids who are not catching fish, along with instructions. I offer to help the guy launching alone, including parking his vehicle. I am never in so much of a hurry that I can't take a minute to help a fellow sportsman. I have several times asked the young fellow fishing from shore near the launch if he wants to fish for the day if I am running solo. I ALWAYS respond to a boat needing a tow or some assistance. I take young guys fishing and get them hooked, give them lures, sometimes rods. I sell them boats at my cost os they c an continue to fish. I remember being a kid fishing brooks with mudworms. I would have killed to be fishing on a boat but growing up poor it was never an option. I try to make that dream come true for others.
