After a busy week I set no plans for Sunday and was looking forward to a relaxing day. My wife and I discussed going on a road trip, finding a place to have brunch and spending the rest of the day with a clear agenda.
I got a message at 7:00 on the nose from Travis asking me if I was going fishing and I advised him Nicki and I were headed out on our road trip. He messaged me back and said that he and dad (Ed) were breaking out The Pumkinseed Won for her shakedown cruise and to try out their new FishHawk.
My wife and I made it less than a mile before we ran into Ed and Travis at the local gas station. A quick visit with them and I was dropping my wife back off at home and meeting the boys at Red Gate.
I beat Travis and Ed to the ramp and was extremely disappointed with what I saw. Some local, non-sportsman imbecles had pushed the porta pottie the State of Vermont provided onto the ramp, right at the waters edge, ripped off the treads to the standing dock to the left of the ramp, loaded it with what appears to have 3 tires and set it ablaze. It was still smoldering as we launched the boat.
Talk about litteraly leaving a bad taste in your mouth.....it was foul.
Oh, did I mention I believe they cut the dock loose that was attached to the standing platform as well.....the non-sportsmen imbeciles left their hatchet out on the platform.
Upon exiting the river we pointed north in search of the fleet and warmer waters. We wasted no time in setting lines and enjoyed trying out the new probe. The fish were tight lipped for us but we didn't mind. It was a nice morning and great conversation was had.
We found the fleet and visited with a few folks on the radio. A couple of trips around in the warmest water we found and we had a release on Ed's lucky/favorite spoon. He said that one was going to fire! I was in position so I grabbed the rod and we landed a 16" siver. The skunk was given the boot!
We were running a combination stick baits on long lines and spoons on two riggers. The new probe had it's very own rigger and we were sure to keep it out of harms way!
During a mild snow squall while the three of us were huddled under the canvas I noticed one of our long line rods thumping away. I kicked Ed out of our heated enclosure and comanded him to grab that rod!! He jumped to attention, exited the comfy canvas enclosure and slid on the snow covered deck toward the transom. Got a little slick in the back of the boat.
Well, that was our second legal salmon...two in the box.
We took our time picking up lines and stowing the gear and made our way back to the mouth of the Otter.
All in all a great shakedown trip.
Thanks Ed and Travis for dragging the Ol Kamel along.
Oh yeah, someone went on a salvage mission and dragged the dock section out of the lake, back up the river and resecured it to the deck section that the non-sportsmen imbeciles cut loose. It was back when we pull up the ramp on our way home. If you hear of anyone "bragging" about burning the porta-pottie.....turn 'em in.
