Here is a picture Taken at Burlington harbor on Saturday 6/29/13. Makes one think twice. Make sure to click on it to enlarge it. Then you can see the detail. Capt. Tony

Worst storm I was ever in was when my Dad, my Wife and I were perch fishing off the end of Ball Island back in the late 70's. We could see the storm traveling up the lake on the NY side and for a long time it looked like it was going to keep going north and end up by Swanton. Very quickly it decided to change directions and headed straight for us. We hauled anchor and fanny in my Dads heavy old underpowered 16' Larson Trihull. It had a top end of about 8 mph and that just wasn't enough for comfort on this day. We were running for the launch at Killkare but barely made a tiny cove halfway down the North side of Burtons Island. We ducked in just as the storm really hit in earnest. I threw the anchor out of the stern and tied the bow off to a tree on the shore. Just as it was getting real bad, things really broke loose with some of the hardest rain I've ever experienced. The Lightning was hitting the trees all over Burtons. We were huddled on a downed log on the beach, huddled under a piece of canvas. We wouldn't go into the wood line because of the way the trees were exploding behind us. The lake went from glass calm to rolliing 3 foot chop driven by gale force winds in a matter of minutes. At one point the anchor pulled out of the bottom and I had to wade in and reset it to keep the boat from being damaged. Lightning was hitting the lake and I could fell the tingling in my legs. Scary stuff. Luckily we came out OK and after the storm had passed, the lake let down pretty fast and we were able to make it back to the KillKare launch and haul out.
It was a great day on the lake right up until that storm changed directions and came on us in short order. I learned a valuble lesson about thunder storms that day.
Nowadays with 5 different weather programs on my Android phone, I can check the radar and feel a little better about what may be coming. It's not foolproof for sure but at least it's better than the wet finger in the wind method we used 40 years ago.

We had a lot of lightning in Prescott Arizona where I lived for a year as a wee tot. Once I watched my mom grab a "lit up" TV cord to unplug it mid-strike. At least that's my 2-year-old's memory of it (and Mom's not around anymore to set the record straight).
