I inherited my grandfathers 18' starcraft holiday. He only had a 40 HP Merc (a little under powered, but still gets it up on plane, the boat is rated for 140. He had it on the Ocean for over 15 years and took it out of the mouth of the Merrimack River. I feel under normal conditions, its more than enough boat to cross the lake from Shelburne or Charlotte to NY.
Obviously paying attention to weather and such, what is considered to small to cross the broad lake?
thanks!

I've got the same hull, and it's never been a problem with winds under 20-25mph. These boats have pretty high freeboard for their length. I have a closed bow like yours, too, which is somewhat safer than an open bow boat if you happen to stuff it into green water.
I had a 16' glass bass type boat, and I wouldn't take it into the open lake on windy days after almost swamping in 4'ers. That's why I got the big tinny.

18, same as yours. Small enough to trailer and launch solo, big enough for the broad lake. You can have canvas made to get out of the sun/rain on your holiday. I will say that the closed bow boats are better suited to trolling than drifting/casting. Bow access is kinda limited.
