I have just returned from my second trip to Lake Placid. (In-laws). I'm from Western PA. I enjoy trout fishing, but I'm not much of a fly fisherman. I prefer to bass/ pike fish. I haven't taken a rod with me. The entire area seems to be incredible. Next year I want to plan a fishing trip or three around vacation. I can only get up there during summer vacation. Can anyone give me any info on when or where I should head?? What are my options?? My buddy has a 17' Searay, so hitting the lakes is definitely an option. Also I know someone with a camp on Lake Placid, who'll let us slip it there. Is Placid worth my time, or should we head to Champlain?? Is the Ausable river really as good as claimed??
Any info would be appreciated.

Ive only fished placid a couple times and it was pretty slow. Each time I went I got about a dozen Smallmouths but they were all 8-12 inches. I did talk with some guys that were trolling trout and they had a limit of nice fish. Champlain and Tupper lake would be worth the trip if you're after bass/pike.

I would save the boat for Champlain and wade the Ausable for Browns. The Ausable is very good....hit it during the week to avoid the pressure.
I have an Uncle arriving from PA in mid Oct with his boat. This is a general question for anyone out that that could help...
What would be some good areas to go (i.e., mouths of Otter/Lamiolle, Champlain Bridge) and should we be looking at trolling deep or shallow at this time of year? I would like to see these guys get into some fish......thx

There is a billboard in the Crown Point area that says "Welcome to Lake Champlain, home of world class fishing." This should answer your question as to which lake you should fish. I fished Champlain this summer the week ending 4th of July weekend and never caught a smallie less then 1 3/4 pounds. We only saw 6 other fishing boats all week in the 4 mile stretch of lake we fished from Potash bay north to Rock Island(Vermont side of lake). Champlain is unlike any other lake I have been to in that you have the chance of finding feeding schools of bass rather then catching singles here and there. I caught 6 bass(4 smallies and 2 largemouth) on 6 casts off the same man made rock piling. I have heard of others catching 25 fish from the same 10 foot square section of water. If anyone knows of a better fishing lake in the world please tell me(I will move there tomorrow). And for anyone who cares; The jointed shad rap has rendered all other deep diving crank-baits OBSOLETE! Deadly on Champlain smallies(also caught me several drum). Good luck friends!
