Made the journey out west to do a couple days of steelhead fishing. Got into Pulaski @ 11 am Wed. and put the waders on and headed to one of my favorite higher water spots. It didn't take 15 minutes and I had a fish on and first jump it snaps the leader. Nothing super huge but a nice 8-9 lb bright chrome steelie.
About a half hour later I finally get another fish on and land a small 3 lb bright chrome steelie. Ended up having 2 other fish in this spot break me off right on the hookset, one of which came out of the water and it was a soilid 10-11 lb size. Do not use Frog Hair fluro for leader material - it is crap. Went back to the truck and went to another spot, traded for some Seagur fluro for leader material. Hooked 4 fish in this spot and landed one about 5-6 lbs. one of the ones I lost was 8-9 lb size as well. It was a great afternoon of hooking up but landing a bright chrome steelie in high water is not an easy task. I missed as many fish as well, a little slow on the draw. All the fish came on egg sacs with peach and white being the better colors. I also had hits on pink, light blue and chartuse. Salmon eggs outfished trout eggs as well. I fished the Ball Park area around Pulaski.
Today I got the pleasure of a drift boat trip with a friend of mine on the upper half of the river. We fished hard all day but the bright sun along with all the pressure put on the fish the last couple of days shut the fish right down. Fished very hard to go 0-4 and my friend went 1-3. I had 2 that were 10lb size on, just couldn't keep up buttoned in the fast water. All the fish hit today were sitting in the heat(fast water) and they take off down stream when hooked - and they can really go!! It was one of the better days though that I have had on the river - my buddys grilled some buggers on the drift boat and got to hang out and fish with a good guy. White and pink egg sacs got my hits and my friends hits were all on a cream colored 8 mm trout bead. Played around with a centerpin setup today and it was not as hard to cast I as thought it would be.
There are plenty of steelies in the river, it is going to be real good fishing out there this winter. The steelhead are very soild this year and there will be plenty more come to when the weather is colder and the crowds are at home. Steelhead fishing the Salmon River in the winter is a great time.
