5 AM. I eased my old beat up jonboat into the placid waters of Mirror Lake, also known as #10 Pond. The mournful cry of a loon permeated the stillness of the morning, to be answered by its mate further up the lake. Tendrels of fog wafted skywards; only to turn to nothingness a few feet up. I smiled. I love this time of day. Quickly I set up a rod with a J-7 jointed rapala in rainbow trout pattern. The other rod was running the same spinnerbait I had on last time . I hitched the clips of the Minn Kota to the battery and we were off. The plan for today was simple. Simply troll around the lake and see what happens. Halfway through the 1st pass the rapala goes off. Good size perch, a keeper. I threaded it on my stringer, changed out the spinnerbait for a Yo Zuri pin minnow in gold color. Made one complete pass around the lake, couple more perch. About halfway through my 2nd pass by the near point the rod with the pin minnow starts slamming in the holder. I grabbed it up and looked up just in time to see this BEAUTIFUL Rainbow clear the water like a shot. I think my Jaw hit the bottom of the boat. Two more jumps and 3 good runs later I eased the 20 1/2 inch 3 1/2 lb Rainbow into the net. I was going to release him until I saw all the blood. The rear treble had shredded his left gill pretty bad. Well he'll taste good on the grill. ;D Made 2 more passes but that was all to be had. Was off the water by 11. Total today, 3 perch 1 rainbow.
