For a change of pace I've gotten the canoe out and hit some of the small ponds around the area. Last weekend I spent a couple of hours on Indian Brook reservoir in Essex. It's a nice little pond and loaded with bass. It was a bit windy so maneuvering a 17ft canoe by myself proving somewhat of a challenge. Managed to get several nice smallies on stick baits and a nice 3+ pounder in a black jig/grub. I also caught a nice largemouth that jumped a couple times and spit my crank-bait for a long line release. This morning I tried Colchester pond. It was the first time that I have fished it. A nice pond and there were only a couple others on the water. I found several nice smallies tight to the bank and on near shore rock piles. Most about 1.5- 2lbs but a couple 3+. They really like black senkos and Pop R's. Once I located the fish they pretty much slammed the baits as soon as they hit the water. Seeing a 3 pound smallie blow up on a popper in only 5 ft of water is pretty exciting in my book. Here's a senko smallie: I like to set one rod in the rod holder and troll a stick-bait while I paddle around. You'd be surprised what you catch this way. Like a couple of nice pike for instance: I like small pond fishing!

Thanks for the cool report and nice pics! I have a 17' Grumman. When I'm solo and it's windy I like to sit in the front seat and use an anchor.

Voyager,
Those two ponds are 5 to 10 minutes from the house. I bring my kids to them now. Fished em in the late 70's early 80's.
Neat report! There is Smallies over 5 lbs in Colchester Pond some 6 lb monsters.

thanks for the report, I hit Colchester Pond a couple of times in the winter and always I have a great time. I don't know if you have tried it but try the north end by the inlet as my son says it is very good up there in the summer
