I've booked a place to stay on Grand Isle the second week of July.I"ve never fished Champ before so any help would be greatly appreciated.I live in southern Maine and fish mostly Mousam Lake and Square Pond in York county.Any particular baits/colors that are best for Champlain? Best line color/lb test for the lake? Will the spawn be over by then?Any and all comments welcomed. Thanks, B.D.

Boss-- The spawn should be pretty well over by then. After the spawn, the smallies tend to go deep and roam. First, get the Fishing Hotspots map for the north section (they have them at northernbass.com). Spend some time looking at where you are going to be staying and what fishing opportunities are near you (think reefs, shoals, weed edges). email me and I'll give you some ideas of baits and presentations. dludg@aol.com

I've fished Mousam lake a few times. The same baits and techniques that work on Mousam in July will work on Champlain in July.

Scott, Thanks for the reply.I fish mostly baitcasting equipment spooled with 8-10lb Trilene XT green. Is this line O.K. for Champlain or are there better choices?I've never fished a lake with zebra mussels before so I'm open for suggestions. Thanks again,B.D.

That would be good. You might want to spool a reel with some 8# fluorocarbon line too. There are a lot of smallmouth areas on the lake that have very clear water so the fluoro might give you an added advantage. The smallmouth love crayfish so look for rocky areas and use crayfish colors. Tubes, unweighted Senko's and Jerkbaits (clown colored husky jerk) are my personal favorites but all the usual smallmouth baits will work fine.
