My wife and I are heading up to the lake the end of May. We're staying on S Hero Island. How is the smallmouth fishing on the inland sea.

Tracker,
Inland Sea is one of the best areas in the northeast, if not the country for smallmouth. Keep in mind that it is catch and release via artificials until the 2nd Saturday in June.
Usually fishing the lakers and salmon this time of year, but your best bet is likely shallow rocky areas that are easiliy found throughout the area. Understand that plastics such as Slug-O's are productive this time of year. Maybe some spring bass fisherman can give you better info here. I would be interested also.
If the smallies are tight-mouthed you may want to give the salmon or pike a shot. Salmon pretty much on top this time of year and can be caught flatline trolling spoons or plugs even if you have a small rental. Find shallow weeds and throw big spinners or jerk sticks for the pike.
Do yourself a favor and get a good map. I recommend the Hot Spot maps (Northern Region) if you can find them.
Tight Lines,

Early in the year I like jigs, esp. hair jigs and tubes. I'd work your way in from deeper (20-30') towards spawning areas. Purple and black hair jigs are my favorite while for tubes I use natural looking greens and browns on a 1/8 oz weight, takes a while to reach bottom but that slow fall really works well when the water temps are still in the 50's.
I also like suspending jerk baits- rouge's and husky jerks. Make sure you incorporate some lengthy pauses as you work it back in. I would expect that you could catch bass from 2 feet out to 30. Just look for spawning flats and rocks, the smallies should be close by! Also remember that smallmouth will spawn much deeper than largemouth.
Another lure that is often over looked is a blade bait, such as a heddon sonar or a vibe-e. It can be deadly on deeper fish.
Good luck!
