They should be in this month? They are fishing Shad in the Merrimac. The breeders fallow them up as they spawn so they should start seeing bigger schools at the end of April. But May herring run is when it's on!

Before you plan a trip check the local tides. You are looking for 2 hours before high tide in most areas. June, July and August are the real hot months for stipper fishing. Night fishing is preferred from shore if you are really looking for big ones.
To get you started from shore........
BAIT- I would avoid chunk bait unless it was caught that day. Night fishing eels has produce many good size fish in the past. If you just want to go catch a ton of schoolies try sand worms.
LURES- Bombers that are jointed J15's, Bucktails w/5"grub trailer, Large swim baits, Top water (day only) Striper swipers, Blue and green always work well.
I would recommend asking the local bait shop before dropping a ton of money on what might work. They will have the tides as well for that part of the area.

They're out there! Been running pretty good around MA and RI since before Memorieal day. I was out at Race Point (P-town) week before Memorial Day and heard reports of bass being caught. Weather had been very cool so this was putting the damper onthe action. However, massive tons of bait and mackeral all over Race Point Beach. Will be down in RI in two weeks and hope for some good action at night. Will be trying big rigged Slug-go's instead of live eels.

I'm Nantucket bound Sat. AM for a week of surf fishing for stripers and blues. Hoping for some good weather and good fishing. Great Point is often times closed due to piping plover, hopefully it'll be open, when the point is on, it's really on. Looking forward to it.

Caught a 35" striper on a pearl bomber out on Nantucket. Weather was bad, first 4 days rain and wind, and no fish. Caught my only keeper the last day of the trip. But it was better than working...

Well we just spent a couple of days in Sailsbury MA on the river and it was a tad slow. Sat night We put in @ the ball field just up from the route 1 bridge and decided to just visit my buddies friend who is a charter captain and keeps his boat docked just below the bridge. We ended up hanging out at the dock catching small pout and having beers. We ended up getting a few hours of sleep in the cuddy on his boat. Before daylight we headed out to the flats and could not buy a fish and ended up heading up to the bridge and tying off. Spot 2 no luck, Untied and headed up stream , we tried everything and then headed back out to the flats. We finnaly nail a few schoolies and call it quits at noon. We went and dried out and were back on the river by 5:00. Tied up to the bridge and hit a few more small fish. Fished till 12:00am and gave up for the night, docked my boat and grabbed a few hours of sleep in the buddies boat. Back up mon morning and headed out to the flats and it was like glass, we ended up out by the "toothpick" and we got into the fish. There was schoolies everywhere and you couldn't throw a lure without a hit. Ended up out there till noon and called it a day and the end to our trip. We totaled about 20 shorts, no keepers. My buddies friend the charter captain said that the fishing is terrible because of all the rain. Talked to some guys at the ramp that got a few over 38" on the flats. Oh well i plan on going back in a few weeks.

Hey guys,
Just spoke with my buddy a charter capt from Carver Ma, he fishes Plymouth harbor & Monomoy point/flats out on the Cape. He says the Big cows are still in, been one of the best months of june he has seen in a while! Getting ready to start hitting the Tuna out off of P-town. Word is they are starting to show up as well. If you look at "back from Maine" on the Champlain forum, you 'll see a pic of a hog from the cape this past weekend! Good luck to all!

Flashpoint I took Northeren down there and he is right about it being very slow in the rivers. Your friend is also right about the fishing being great around Plymouth. The fish are avoiding going to far up the rivers due to all the fresh water raging out. It is keeping all the bait fish down low so they have no need to go up river. I did not feel comfortable about taking northeren out of the mouth of the Merrimac, because of the bad currents from the 2 weeks of rain. Getting out would have been easy its getting back in between tides that would have been tricky. 1 person was killed there last week and 2 others injured. I did not want to put anyone in danger over the possibility of catching bigger fish.
We wasted our time up river and the wind was to much on the first day to get near Jappa flats. We were very much at the weathers discretion the whole time. Our luck changed the last day of the trip being able to get down to the plum Island rip. The fish were breaking around us for about an hour or so and when they finally slowed down we moved over to Badges rock and dropped anchor anchor for the rest of the day. We never broke the 28" mark but I really enjoyed pulling out all my tricks to get Northeren Fish in the boat.
Northeren would agree with me that we were the only boat in the river landing fish. Is that bragging a little? Why yes, yes it is ;D
Great trip Northeren I will remember it forever.

bailbuster, Dockside and i were in my 15' sylvan with a 50hp. We wern't quite ballsy enough to go past the toothpick. I think next spring i will be looking for a 18-21' center console just so i can go out to the mouth. I also will never own another boat with carpet. I still can't get the herring smell out of it.
