I fish primarily in the shelburne bay area but have been recently going north of Burlington to the Colchester/Mallett's bay area. As you may have seen from my previous post, I can't seem to catch much of anything. However, I have had fishfinders on past boats and if nothing else, I thinks its fun to see what's under the boat and what I'm not catching. Does anyone have a particular model they reccomend. It seems like the Humminbird Matrix 17 is pretty decent. I don't remember what I had on my old boat but I am pretty certain it was a very old humminbird. Is there a particular transducer mount that works better than others? It seems like the standard transom mount is what most people do. Anything particular to Lake Champlain I should know? I already drove over a rock between Burlington and the mouth of shelburne bay that did a real number oon my skeg and tore two blades off my prop. (all fixed now) The water was about 8-10 feet deep where I was and I suppose I must have just caught the very tip of a big rock or something. So...back to fishing...any advice on the fishfinder issue would be great.

first, if you hit bottom in 8-10 feet, you really are a magician. Second, not knowing what type of boat you have, it's hard to recommend a unit. My best guess is that you should get a basic unit with a transom mount. Eagle makes some good units for under $200, as does Humminbird and Garmin. Go to Basspro or Cabelas or Northern Bass (.com) and check them out. You can't go wrong with the Garmin 120 for $120. You should be aware that mostly you will be using it for determining depth and bottom structure, rather than to find specific fish. Head up to Burlington Bay and throw a Senko around the launch. They just released a few thousand bass there after the BASS tourney this weekend.
