I got this email today, anyone else hear about this? Shawn, can you tell us anything about this? And finally, what does it mean when they say the LCBP will use this data to "Make decisions to improve the health of the watershed"...are they a new branch of government?
Dear LCI Anglers,
It's time to put your angling skills to the test and help protect Lake Champlain's fish and future anglers. BioDiversity Research Institute (BRI), a non-profit research and conservation organization out of Gorham, Maine, is conducting fish sampling during this year's LCI Father's Day Fishing Derby on Lake Champlain. With help from Lake Champlain International (LCI), we are asking that you, the angler, help us collect samples of lake trout, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and white perch. Samples will be taken with a small plug that is non-lethal to the fish and will allow you keep the fish if desired. The goals of this study are:
Determine mercury levels in Lake Champlain fish
Determine polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Lake Champlain fish
Both of these contaminants have known negative impacts on wildlife and people; by helping us sample you will enable the Lake Champlain Basin Program to make decisions that will improve the health of the watershed and protect generations of anglers.
If you will be angling at the LCI Father's Day Derby presented by Yamaha between June 18 - 20, 2011 and are interested in sampling, you can contact Ian Johnson at BRI, (207) 839-7600 ext 207 or ian.johnson@briloon.org.
If you don't catch any fish, don't worry, we won't tell anyone.
Thank you in advance, from LCI and BRI, for helping us protect Lake Champlain's world class fisheries!
Sincerely,
Ross Saxton
