They need to do something. It is unreal how many bears i have seen in the past 3 years in places that we used to not see them. Hopefully they just extend it through the rifle season and maybe offer a 2nd tag. I would imagine that it still wont bring the numbers down to where they want them. Less and less people seem to hunt bear and the majority of hunters i know won't take one if they see them. The biggest reason i hear of people not taking them is that they tried bear meat and it was terrible. I think if people tried meat from a properly processed bear they may change there mind.

I didn't know venison was good until gunsmith Richard Wells gave me a few pounds of one he shot back in the early '90s. Clean. Then I started learning about caring for meat, and realized that driving around with a deer in the truck bed for 3 days didn't help its flavor any. It can't be cooked well done and taste good either. Bear meat is delicious as well, but it is not venison or beef- those who dislike it often have just thrown it in the oven or a crock-pot and cooked it like beef- and often I have seen packaged bear meat with a lot of tallow and sinew still attached which only aids to its axle-grease potential.
I am excited that our bears are doing well. F&W should re-up a change to the bear management; this is a great renewable resource in our state which is losing so much "fringe" habitat that other game animals thrive on. Bears seem to enjoy this transitioning second growth forestation which chokes up partridge and deer habitat in many areas.
