2nd time out payed out big time, while I was out scouting for deer yesterday I came across one of our old honey holes and there were over a hundred Mallards, Blacks, Teal and Wood ducks. It really was a no brainer that I had to be there this morning.
Set up Decoys about 6:15 and had ducks dropping in within minutes. Group after group 10's, 15's, and 20+ bird flocks dropping in just after shooting time, but it was still too dark for me to shoot. We let them all sit on the pond for 20 minutes or so until it got light enough to shoot. Then all hell broke loose when a small group of 5 or so came in and made a bunch take off then those magic words of "Take Em' " were said and we started shooting. Ducks were falling from the sky and soon our guns were empty. We are quick to reload because we saw the big flock coming back in to land!!! We let them come back in to land and just as the first Drake set his wings to land we let him have it. Again the sky's were raining ducks.
I called it, and decided to go pick up our birds and see what we got, knowing that most ducks that came in were drakes. We started across the swamp and a small group tried to land less than 5 yards from me. We ended up with 5 Drake Mallards and 3 hens. As there were some Wood ducks and Teal around we tucked back into our blind and waited.
It wasn't but 5 minutes and we had a single Black come in and we took that as well. I figured before the big flock of Mallards came back around we would pick up quick and get out of there to let it settle back down so we can hunt it again this week.
