I'm from Maine and have a camp near Rangeley and Mooselookmeguntic. I just started trolling the lakes a few years ago and have had my best catches on DB Smelt running 1.8 to 2.3 mph.
Anyone fishing DB's on Lake Champlain with any success?
I went to High School in St Albans Vt back in the 60's and want to come back and fish the lake for Salmon and trout this season.
The DB smelt have hooks that seem to fail under not too much pressure. I've straighted out more than a few and lost some nice fish because of it. One laker in particular haunts my memory! I've tried going up a size on the treble hook but it kills the action. I've considered going to a little stouter single hook that doesn't have that effect on my lure. I see pictures in several posts that show single hooks on your lures for Lake Champlain. It this the law or personal preference?

Hi Dukdog
To me single hooks are the preferance.. (not required by VT law) They are much easier to release the fish and also easier to remove from the net! I think that you could get away with increasing the size of a single without getting the DB smelt to spin, but you will need to experiment...
If you make it back to Champlain this summer, be sure to post your trip, good or bad.. We would love to hear how it went for you.

Welcome to the site dukdog ! I fish Winnie and the Maine lakes also. My DB's work just fine on Champ. As for the hooks.. I switched all my lures to Siwash hooks. Just my preference. Although this year in NH. Only single point hooks on lures for trolling. On the DB's I use size # 4 . I like the Gamakatsu
Good luck.

I have a few that I change the tape color on depending on the kind of day that it is, and find them very effective run as a cheater

I know people that use DB's very effectively with singles on Champlain...

I have Acme Super Smelt and decorate them with Gamakatsu. Nice combination, and hooks are sharp and hard.

I don't use DB's very often. I "threw" a hook on a silver and blue on lead core and caught a nice walleye in the Inland Sea, trolling for salmon. There's a post somewhere...

Funny but Mooselook Wobblers aren't that popular any more up there.
I may be wrong but from what I've seen, sewn smelt gets fished a lot more than anything else.
Personally, I'm not that horny about sewn bait. Some guys whack the crap out of them with it but I haven't had much luck. I stick to trolling spoons.
There's always room in my box for a silver mooselook and there are times when it is absolutely the hot bait on smaller lakes like St. George in late May and early June.

There's a discontinued Acme Super Smelt color that the salmon hammered last summer on a few days. Although on other days it didn't work.
