Nick and I launched the boat at 6am at Apple Island. We set the lines from 40 to 60 and let the search begin. We started with a couple of shorts. Then a 19 inch Salmon. Another short and a nice fat 19 inch Brown(2 big lamprey on the brown). I was happy to catch the Brown. My wife put an order in for a Brown for dinner tonight. OK, so now the pressure is off. ;D Then it got rough and we went dry for a couple of hours. We found a spot where the bait was stacked 75 to 90 ft of water. Pop goes the rod and Nick put a nice clean 21 inch Salmon in the boat. A couple more shorts and bang the drag screams and I tell nick we should clear the rods. I look at the line counter and we are 200 out. Thats a good 120+ feet this Salmon just took. You know its a Salmon when the fish turns and runs straight at the boat. A little while later Nick slid the net under a Beautiful 25 inch, 5.5 lb male Landlock. The first 5+ Salmon in the boat since May.
The bellies of the fish we cleaned today very little in them. The big one had 1 smelt. The stomachs are small. I thought I would see more in the big ones belly. These fish look healthy. But it does not appear that they are eating a lot. In the fall when we catch fish gorging themselves, their stomachs are full. But even if they are not full they are stretched out from eating big meals. The fish we are catching in the Inland Sea right now have very small stomachs. The stomach of this 5.5 only had one smelt in it and it could not fit much more than that!
All fish came on Mp6's and small Flashkings. Speed on GPS was 2.5 to 3 maintaining 2.2 to 2.4 on the Depth Raider. You have to put your time in and work for these fish but they are out there.
Good luck to everyone who can get out fishing. Unfortunately I have a long stretch of work ahead of me. Enjoy the pics.
