I see nothing wrong with a little discussion on topics that interest members of this forum, sometimes it gets a little heated...so what? if you don't like the thread you can always stay off it... also ,isn't open discussion the very definition of a forum?
Being called a Jarhead is a compliment to me because I earned that title.
I don't think it was meant to "hurt my feelings", I am a Jarhead I have no feelings ;D
I would also like to add I currently have 2 Johnson outboards in the shop getting fixed, while my trusty Mercury is bearing the load like it all ways has. ;D
As for the rest of this thread it's pretty much the same as last year. This one just went on a little longer ;D
Happy fishing to all, please keep feeding the ducks they are delicious ;D

OK, I have been toying with the idea of posting this all day, and decided what the heck, might as well. This is why Ben earned his title as Jarhead. Anyone who can survive a Christmas like this should be proud.

Interesting read. The fact that the Kentucky director of fisheries and a fisheries biologist on his own staff don't seem to be on the same page just goes to show how complex this issue can be. I'd think if the tops of the large tourey organizations took a very public proactive approach to some conervation related initiatives it would help the image a lot and ease tensions. If they sit back and just wait for the various fish and wildlife depts. do the research they might come out looking like bad guys, especially if the depts. come back saying that the tourneys are hurting the fishery. If they go out themselves and publicly research effects of current practices and what steps they can take to increase survival rates they look like the good guys.
Only my two cents. I'm a bass fisherman, love the lake. Not a tournament fisherman, but have taken part in a couple small club events. I think the tournament fishing from the FLW and Bassmaster's series has to have a significant effect on the lake. The numbers Tony mentions is eye opening to say the least. Wouldn't it be fairly easy to take the fish from one of these big tournaments and tag them all.(or maybe the first couple days) Then when were fishing, we see some of these fish that are floating we think are tournament fish could be identified and we would have some hard facts to look at.

I was discussing this topic with a couple of local fisherman yesterday, one oldtimer who didnt have much to say looked up and said why dont these tournement people add a few bucks to the entry fee and hire someone to clean and fillet the fish and donate the food to a local food kitchen !!! Sounded good to me ! Sleeps
limit the bass tournies in the hottest month have smaller catch quotas IF you do have a tournament in the hottest month provide a oxygen rich holding tank and limit the time out of the water for the fish
what makes a succesful fishing tournament is FISH A better managed fishery benefits all parties
I wasn't going to mention this, but what the heck, lord hates a coward. Does anyone else besides me think that the latest fishing reports that mention the small sizes and poor fishing is a symptom of what I am talking about?
YES SIR, YES SIR, YES SIR!! I am not a college educated biologist who studies lake Champlain fisheries. But with the amount of Bass tournaments HELD ON lake Champlain at this time. It is not rocket science to think that this fishery can stand such pressure. Lastly, Hey bass Tourney guys who are reading this, how about posting the results and such of the latest FLW held on Champlain? Inquiring minds want to know??? Capt. Tony www.anbradoncharters.com
You guys are so biased it isn't even funny. It's not rocket science to see that the small fish and tough fishing is caused by new food (alewife), hot weather, weird weather patterns adn many other things. It is not Tx pressure. No sir no sir no sir in no way whatsoever. Total BS. You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see a 150-boat, 300-person tournament like the recent FLW come in and do a CATHC AND KEEP bass tourney. 300 x 5 fish each x 3 days = 4500 DEAD BASS. And it would be perfectly legal. There isn't a single thing Fish & Game could do to prevent it. Now how does 100 dead bass washing ashore look?
And besides, somone said that there were also a couple pike adn a dead catfish. I don't think they were carted around in a livewell, weighed adn released only to die. So it's looking like your tournament BS bashing is pretty wishy washy tome.

Catch and keep would be better than catch and feed the gulls. I want to be able to keep them through the ice to. And F&W holds all the cards, nothing says they HAVE to issue a permit. They are after all entrusted to protect the resource. And I still bust out laughing when I think of that pic you posted.

That's completely contradictory to the main basis of everyone's complaints here. Yah everyone is saying the few dead bass are wasted, but most people are saying that tournaments will lead to the DEMISE of bass fishing on Champlain. But now you're PROMOTING catch and keeping of 4500 bass? What's going to lead to the demise quicker? Uh? Gee, I don't know? 15 or 50 dead bass or 4500 dead bass?
You mgiht be right that F&G doesnt have to issue a permit but you mgiht be wrong. If a permit application meets the statutory criteria then there might not be any ghrounds to deny it. If they tried to deny one, and they were challenged in court, I bet they would lose and get forced to issue one if it was proved no state statutes or laws are being broekn.

Ugh...all I said was that I would rather see the fish eaten than wasted. I would rather be able to keep some through the ice than preserve them for tournies. I cant speak for others, but I have stated over and over that I am not against tournies, just the ammount of them, and what I perceive as a borderline rabid its all or nothing attitude, and a refusal to at least acknowledge that their are conflicts with other users of the resource. As far as the long term affects ? Time will tell. I have my opinions, others have theirs, and you have yours. They are opinions, and I base mine on info from other areas because nothing has been studied here. But like the old saying goes...Opinions are like Aholes, everybody has one and some stink worse than others. I hope mine are wrong, but I keep thinking walleye.

harkness BASS publishes info on what it believes the delayed mortality rate is. If you go by their numbers I still would want to do whatever I could do to minimize it. I love tournament fishing and think it has it's place along side all the other legit uses of the Lake's resources. I'm just talking about ways to increase conservation and minimize our impact.
I also think the food shelter idea and the idea of ice fishermen being able to keep some makes good sense.
We noticed many dead bass right after the bass tournament held at Ti and it is not uncommon for us to see dead bass after one. This time, however, we also saw many pike floating and washing ashore. We live just south of Larrabees Access and have seen this many times. All of the fish washed up on our shoreline appeared to have been hooked pretty good. We bury them cause our labs just love them! We are certain the bass we cleaned up came floating over from the weigh-in on the new york side. I don't believe its intentional by any fishermen. Maybe cooler livewells versus warmer lake water this time of the summer?? Living on the lake allows us to watch all the activity and we rarely see "bad fishermen" but there's always one or two who forget the lake is for everyone.

I am not a tournament fisherman and don't care to be; but I did fish some Bass tournaments many years ago and I know that most tournaments do what they can to promote survival of released fish. I am not here to defend the Bass fishermen or anybody else; but I think the fish kill has little to do with tournaments.
It is not only Bass that are dying in Champlain. If you check around Monitor Bay in Crown Point you will see dead Blue Gills everywhere. Actually you will smell them long before you see them. There are also dead Bass, Northern Pike, Catfish and other fish species starting to appear in the weed lines in a number of bays around the lake.
Is it the heat? Is it pollution? Is it an outcome from the flooding of the lake? Is it just Mother Nature? If they want to blame Mother Nature again; I do hope they give us some facts. This recent fish kill surely makes me think twice about fishing and eating my catch. I personally have no idea but I hope the fish biologist and others from NY DEC and Vermont F&G will look into it quickly and give us a honest report.
