Went to the awards ceremony and tried to write down the details for those who could not attend. It was a good ceremony that moved along pretty well compared to years past. Awards were down due to the 1000 less anglers according to the LCI folks. Payouts were all cash for the adult divisions and some bags with items went to the junior places. I missed the value on many of the places since they weren't always read out loud so if others know some of these numbers please post for the curious. Maybe the LCI will even come on and update the numbers.
Junior Perch 1st place $250 + Bags Junior Coldwater, Coolwater, Warmwater 1st place $250 + Bags ($500 value) 1st place in all species categories $3000 2nd place in all species categories $1000 3rd place in all species categories $750 4th ? 5th? 6th? 7th? 8th place in all species categories $200 9th? 10th?
Superbonus Cool, Cold, and Warm was $6707 each
Team First was $2758 and a 16' Sylvan with 60 hp yamaha 4-stroke Team Second was $1532 Team Third was $919 (Only prize at awards to not get trophy's)
Anglers of the year received $500 each and the biggest trophy you've ever seen.
To win the $30,000 you had to match a secret set of numbers and be in 30th place in your species. None of these numbers hit this year. Odds are 1 in 100 for anyone in 30th place for obvious reasons.
Salmon was .32 Lake Trout was .13 Northern Pike was .12 Walleye was .54 Smallmouth was .24 Largemouth was .75 Carp was .62 Catfish was .42 Bowfin was .81 Sheepshead was .51
The mystery fish to win $300,000 was a fish type and weight selected randomly somehow? It was reported at the banquet that the fish required to win the $300,000 this year was a 18.63 pound Sheepshead.
There were no record breaker awards this year (like the Salmon) because the lakers won it too many times in the past and LCI said they couldn't buy insurance for the award any more so now they have these random decimal chances at $30,000 to decrease the odds a bit of someone winning.
It would be nice if some of you know what 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th paid out in the adult division so we could add that information here.

I dont understand how rules can just arbitrarily change and pay outs get slashed cause some people don't fish and an insurance issue? This seems awfully shifty to me... It us getting real hard to fish this derby if this continues!!!
It is very obvious the LCI is using the lake and the fishermen so they can get rich!!!! When more money is needed, just change the rules then dont send them out!!!
I thought I was fishing for a 30k record salmon... Now it find out it was a farce!!!!
Thanks for the info, now I am very glad I didn't get to attend...

I too must admit that I was quite disappointed that Effie's fish did not earn her 30K. I thought for sure that was a given, but the rules have changed, and they were not spelled out very clearly and that's the part I am having trouble with. The LCI is about family, fun, tradition and of course fishing. Many fisherman are out hoping to set records or have high derby points to win some prizes. The prizes have been pretty good in the past. I was told by the LCI that everyone wants $ now and no one wants product? ?? So this year they boast 750K up for grabs, but it was in fact based on a lottery. I don't think anyone wants a lottery at a fishing derby! I guess I would have thought that the LCI knowing that there were no prizes for record breakers would have spelled this out clearly, if no $ was available, hit up your sponsors for product. I don't want to dwell on what is now the past, we love fishing and fishing the LCI, HOWEVER.... the LCI Board blew it on their 30th leaving many people questioning and wondering what the future brings. This years record breaker has bragging rights, I'm sure if anyone else landed a record breaker and learned what they were not going to get,, they would be writing this post instead of me. AND YUP!!!! WE CAUGHT THE RECORD BREAKER ;D Jeremy

Thanks for the info, now I am very glad I didn't get to attend... WOW!!! We agree on something!!! ;D Once again the LCI gives us smoke and Mirrors. Yes the details ARE in the rules. But as many have stated by using the 30,000 number. Most assumed that the $30,000 would be paid out for a derby record breaking fish as it has in years past. Shame on all who did not read the fine print. That seems to be the case with other things at the LCI. They still will not come forward and admit they are a lobbying group that operates as a nonprofit with paid employees. Nothing wrong with running a nonprofit and having paid employees. But when the owner of the nonprofit also owns the publishing company that is housed in the same building as the nonprofit and does all of their printing. I am quite sure the publishing company charges for the printing? Now, this year Elk publishing as far as I can fine is gone and so is the derby Gazette. I am no expert on the insurance policy questions. But I am quite sure they will sell you a policy for a price based on risk of pay out. Was the insurance for these record breaking fish options pricy? Oh I would say so. So maybe it was not a viable option for the LCI to purchase these policies. However they said themselves they saved 20,000 dollars by doing away with the Gazette. Maybe they could have down sized the derby record cash payout. Say down to 10,000 or something? Insurance would be cheaper Folks would still be ecstatic if they broke the record as Sugarpie did. If Sugarpie had not purchased the extra coldwater bonus she would be leaving with $6,000.00 less. As far as the prizes that are donated. Those are donated by businesses and they can claim a tax deduction on the dollar amount they donated. So a $2.00 lure they say is 6.95 retail value. So at the end of the year they get to deduct $6.95 on their donation of crap they couldn’t sell, and the winner gets a tax form requiring tax to be paid on the Prize. I really hope more people will start asking more questions of the LCI I do not believe we will see anything posted here. We do know that they do read the forum as well as there attorney. Many questions have been asked over and over and nothing ever gets answered. It is for these reasons I long ago pulled all my support regarding the LCI and am very glad I did so. There are many other groups that in my opinion are far better than the LCI. Lake Champlain walleye association, HAT, just to name a couple. Money is tight all around. My advice is if you want to help with donating money ect to help be sure to know where your money is going. Is is going to stock some fish or is it going to get paid to a restaurant for a dinner who’s participants are lobbying hard for their cause? Capt. Tony www.anbradoncharters.com

There are laws against this, if it was me that this happened to I would be calling the State Police. To bad you got screwed, this changes my view of LCI 180 degrees.

This is just sad..........but as we all know....IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY....they don't care about you or me just THEIR COFFIERS....it would be interesting to see how much "they" pocketed........ I agree with Reelax....glad I was not a part of this and yes it does not only smell fishy but the smell of a cess pool seems to be hanging over this tournament....

I always viewed the LCI as a top-rated tourney and something I might do someday for the fun of it.
I am not so sure about the top-rated tourney.... They moneys on 1sts seem a little scarce, sponsors didn't get their promos in the gazette, substantial payouts don't seem go very deep in the field. Even mid-run bass tourneys with mid-placing locals often have contingency payouts that make it worth it for the sponsors of and anglers who are "semi-pro" or amateurs. The Frostbite with Cas aboard was a lot more fun than what this appears at the moment.

I have fished the LCI for over 20 years and been a sponsor for quite a few and I have to say LCI dropped the ball this year.I agree with Capt Tony that they should have took the sponsors money and bought what every insurance policy they could and stuck with the record breaking fish not some stupid number that no one knows what it is until the awards if I want a lottery I'll buy a mega bucks ticket. derby's are suppose to be about catching the biggest fish not the 30th fish. This how well informed we are as a sponsor I thought all of the top 30 fish where eligible for the 30,000.not just the 30th place fish. Then to pay all this money to be a sponsor and not have any gazette with an add in it if things don't change for next year we will only sponsor the kids derby and not the $30,000 fish.another thing that I don't think was rite is cold water angler of the year only had 2 fish when the rules state that it has to be one fish from each day Sat,Sun and Mon I called three times about this and no one could tell me that I was wrong or rite. Now in LCI deference $9607.00 is allot of money for top fish and the team prize is pretty big but I think there are some fishy things going on at LCI.

The LCI slogan used to be "Its all about the fish". I used to have the bumper sticker. James Ehlers put an end to that a long time ago. Now it's about family, fun, friends, conservation and of course, making a living. Oh shit, we forgot about the fish!!!!! Yes size matters. A fishing derby is all about family, fun, friends, conservation, but in the end it's about the fish!!!!
